Misconceptions of owning a small business.

If you are a start-up and have been contemplating what your life as a small business owner would look like, then you probably have a dream vision.  One where you see plenty of perks that go along with all the hard work you invest in your business.

There is no harm in that. Infact, it will help you reach those goals.

What can become problematic for many start-up business owners in the time frame they expect to reach their dreams.

For many people there is a misconception that if they own their own business,  then they will be rolling in money.   Their are many businesses that do very well ride out of the gates, but for every one of those there are thousands of others that barely stay alive.  So manage your expectations and align them with a reasonable time line to achieve them.

Another misconception is the belief that you will have instant success. Your ego leads you to believe that the statistics don't apply to you.

Free time is another.  New business owners are equating free time to running a small business.  That is not always the case.  You need the early years to grow your business and then you might enjoy some free time to travel more.

Flexibility is a misconception I hear often.  Starting a business (depending on what kind) may require you to have less flexibility then a standard job.  This is a long play.

Teachers say, don't become a teacher for summers off.  I say don't become an entrepreneur for the misconceptions above.
