Building relationships. Do it.

The strong foundation of a small business comes from the success of relationship building.  Connecting with clients and customers, by treating each individual in a unique way that you feel will support them.

Building relationships is not just about what you talk about, or how you communicate. It's about going above and beyond in the service you offer.  For example: An introverted chiropractor may not necessarily want to chat with clients in order to build a relationship.  Instead, they might be flexible to their unique needs and offer valuable information, or even refer them to specialists that could do more for them than they can outside of their offerings.   As a result, trust is built and that trust will lead to a returning client and referrals.

Here are some tips on how to build relationships with new customers;

1) Always make a good first impression by dressing appropriately based off your industry standards.

2) Offer them free information.  Draw them into your community, where you don't always sell, but rather inform.  For example, newsletters, social groups, workshops etc.

3) Speak positively.  Don't use negative language that can turn away long term clients/customers.

Here are some tips on how to build relationships with existing customers;

1) Be the connector.  You have probably learned about what it is they do, or what they like.  This might be the opportunity to introduce them to people that can help them or purchase from them.

2) Offer appropriately timed, special promotions that will benefit your clients, and that will help your cashflow.

3) Go a little deeper and stay connected personally.  Texting, dm's etc.

Toronto business owners can build new communities and relationships by meeting new people at networking events.  Throw that into your rotation to build your customer base.
